Exterior Masonry Prep and Painting

It’s that time of year! With summer approaching many of you may have decided your property needs a facelift. We’re definitely seeing a flourish of external painting and decorating enquiries! So how do you perform a transformation of the exterior of your property effectively and efficiently? To do this we’ll demonstrate the process using Dulux Trade products.

External Painting

Step One: Clean

Like any ordinary painting job, the first step is to always clean the surface, you may find for external this can be a bit more of an issue due to potential mould or algae. so wash down the walls with a standard detergent to remove any dirt or grime and be sure any mould or algae is completely removed before moving onto the next stages.

Step 2: Repair Any Imperfections

Repair any cracks or holes spotted during the cleaning process. You may decide to use a powder filler for the purpose of sanding on masonry, or a flexible filler for its easy use and solid finish.

Step 3: Stabilising Primer

Especially if you’re working with a powdery or sandy surface then just a layer of external paint wont be enough to create a sealant. If the surface is stable then this stabilising primer is not necessarily needed. However, i would always recommend giving the surface a thin coat as a precaution.

Step 5: Painting the Masonry Walls
For the final coats you just need to choose what finish you would like, a textured sandy like finish or a smooth masonry finish and apply using a masonry brush and roller. This paint only comes in water base but following the Dulux Trade Weathershield 3 stage process guarantees a life expectancy for up to 15 years.
